HARNESSING-POSITIVE-PSYCHOLOGY-TOOLS FOR-SUCCESS

You have a reservoir of untapped potential waiting to be harnessed for positive change. Are you using all the power you have within you?
As we embark on a new year, there’s no better time to reflect on the past, embrace the present, and plan for the future.
In this blog, we’ll explore low-effort, proven strategies for success in 2024. We’ll be delving into the importance of intrinsic goals and understanding your strengths. Willpower is at the heart of goal attainment, so we’ll dip into positive psychology tools and the transformative impact of visualisation.

Unleashing the Power of your Subconscious Mind

Your mind is incredibly powerful. Much of that power lies within your subconscious. It is said that the subconscious mind is 30,000 times more powerful than the conscious mind. This often-overlooked aspect of our mental landscape plays a crucial role in shaping our thoughts and behaviours. By understanding the mechanics of the subconscious mind, we can learn to leverage its influence to drive positive change in our lives.

The subconscious mind is our reservoir of thoughts, memories, and emotions. It stores our automatic responses – those that operate beneath the surface of our conscious awareness. Unlike the conscious mind, which deals with immediate perceptions and logical reasoning, the subconscious absorbs and stores information. It shapes our beliefs, habits, and responses to the world. It operates effortlessly and tirelessly, influencing our behaviour without us actively realising it.

Harnessing the power of the subconscious mind for good can involve intentional programming. Awareness is key, journaling can provide insights to your subconscious mind, helping you identify patterns or beliefs of which you had not been previously aware. Visualising positive outcomes and success can help align the subconscious. Focussing on the positive in your life will enhance your positive emotions. In my book I detail possibly my favourite, highly effective positive psychology tool, “three good things”. By feeding the subconscious mind optimistic messages, we can prompt it to work in tandem with our conscious desires. Our subconscious mind can be our ally, steering us toward positive change and personal growth.

Hypnosis is a highly effective modality to harness the power of the subconscious. I share more insight about the subconscious mind in The Lazy Guide to Happy and my bonus series of audio resources. Embark on your own transformative journey by tuning into the first audio session on Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). In under 20 minutes, you’ll experience a simple yet potent exercise that will redefine the way you handle those irksome memories, habits, or experiences. Get ready to unlock the door to positive change – your journey starts with the press of a play button.

Setting Goals with Purpose

Sustainable success lies in setting goals, but not all are created equal!

In Chapter 6 of my book The Lazy Guide to Happy, I share why intrinsic goals are superior and how they provide a solid foundation for meaningful and fulfilling achievements. It’s not just about what you want to achieve but understanding why those goals matter to you on a deeper level. Magic happens when your goals resonate with your core values. Aligning your aspirations and innermost desires can be transformative, creating formidable and positive outcomes.

Identifying and Utilising Your Strengths

A crucial step in personal development is recognising and utilising your strengths. I am very drawn to the VIA survey. It’s free and considers the traits common to us all, regardless of race, culture, economics, or class. There are six primary strengths: wisdom and knowledge, transcendence, courage, humanity, temperance, and justice.

Character strengths are the positive parts of your personality that make you feel authentic and engaged. You possess every strength, each one to a different degree, giving you a unique character strengths profile. Try the VIA survey and explore the insights it offers. When we are armed with self-knowledge, we can navigate challenges with confidence and purpose. Research also shows that understanding and applying your strengths can help boost your confidence and happiness.

The Science of Willpower

Willpower is part of the resilience needed to stay on course when the going gets tough.

Think of willpower as a muscle you use for self-control and one you flex in different situations every day. Like a muscle, willpower can be strengthened with practice. While some people may seem more successful at it, science tells us that self-control isn’t a finite resource, depleted after a certain point. It’s available even when you’re feeling drained, especially if you have a strong motivation.

Imagine someone putting a gun to your head – suddenly, your willpower and drive skyrocket. Your innate strength is still accessible, even when you’re feeling depleted, given the right motivation.

Surprisingly, an effective way to exercise your self-control muscle is through meditation. Meditation cultivates mindfulness. When you are acutely aware of your thoughts, emotions, and impulses, you will recognise the onset of distractions. You’ll be empowered to respond with greater self-control.

You can also streamline your decision-making process to save your self-control energy. Minimising daily decisions, even the smallest ones, increases your capacity for self-control. For instance, when using social media, each decision, from liking a post to responding to a comment, chips away at your limited energy resources for the day. Another simple strategy is to choose your work outfit from a capsule wardrobe.

Here’s a simple exercise you can try today to expand your self-control capacity. Use your non-dominant hand for a simple task. As you get better at it, your confidence will grow.

An intelligent approach to harnessing self-control is to avoid situations where you might need it! Saying no to extra tasks when you have a looming deadline is a proactive way to conserve your self-control for what truly matters. Every small change will compound and create a fundamental shift.

The Hope Map – Charting Your Course to Success

Hope is a powerful force that propels us forward, even in adversity. In my book, I explore the concept of the Hope map and how you can create one for yourself. I want to help you foster a positive mindset that fuels your efforts and keeps you moving toward your goals.

The ‘best possible self’ exercise is a powerful tool for personal growth. By envisioning and articulating your ambitious future outcomes, you cultivate realistic optimism. My bonus audio session will help you sharpen your focus and motivate and guide you toward realising your full potential professionally and personally. Try it now!

The Transformative Power of Visualisation

Visualisation is a valuable technique that bridges imagination and achievement. It’s not only for elite athletes. You can harness this tool in almost every situation. When you understand how to create vivid mental images of your desired outcomes, your mind lays the groundwork for turning aspirations into reality.
This technique goes beyond wishful thinking; it’s about creating a mental blueprint that primes you for action.

Navigating the Path to Goal Attainment

Goals fall into two types: end-state and process. End-state goals conclude once achieved, while process goals persist over time. How you approach your goals can vary – you can opt for big, sudden changes or adopt gradual shifts by forming small, consistent habits. Breaking down your goals into manageable chunks will often feel more achievable.

Let’s use visualisation to demonstrate how it can help with goal attainment. Tapping in to how you achieved previous goals can help inform how to map your current goals.

Think for a moment about a time when you reached one of your goals. Looking back at the process, what steps did you take? What small actions were involved? Did you seek help from others?

Now, picture the achievement: How did it feel? Who was there with you? What could you see and hear in that moment?

Let me take you through this visualisation step by step in my ‘Goals’ audio session. Find a quiet place where you can relax and try it now.
